Learn how PIRSA implemented information governance for Microsoft Teams

Teams is the fastest growing software in the history of Microsoft. Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) has been on the forefront of the adoption of Microsoft Teams. Deanna Flemming, formerly Manager of Digital Workspace at PIRSA (currently Records and Information Manager at the Department of Treasury and Finance) has been influential in driving the adoption of Microsoft Teams for PIRSA while also ensuring that the compliance for Teams is met.

Deanna was previously the Manager of Records and Information Management at PIRSA, which placed her in a unique position to look at Microsoft Teams and the governance around it. While PIRSA was well within planning how they were going to roll out Microsoft Teams, there were many challenges to consider.

The thoughts that circled around Deanna's mind the whole time included: "How were we going to manage the information, as in the documents attached within Teams. Lots of business decisions were being made and updated, how were we going to capture that back into our ECM?”

Other key considerations included how PIRSA was going to manage what information comes across into ECM. In addition, they needed to look at how external sharing across agencies was managed.

Deanna remarked on how COVID-19 pushed PIRSA to adopt digital transformation much quicker than planned. She was tasked with explaining the importance of information governance to the IT team and reached out to her Objective account manager with her concerns to see if a solution could be brought forward. Deanna worked closely with Objective to bring governance to Microsoft Teams and ECM. As of November 2020, PIRSA has officially rolled out Objective Gov365.
